BUILZEE TOOLS
Flooring Quantity Calculator
Use the Builzee flooring quantity calculator to estimate how much flooring you need based on room dimensions, waste allowance and product coverage. Add multiple rooms and, if you know the coverage per box, estimate how many boxes to purchase.
How to Use the Flooring Quantity Calculator
Use the flooring quantity calculator to estimate how much flooring you need based on the dimensions of your room or project area.
Enter the length and width of the space, then choose a waste allowance for cuts, layout and unusable pieces. If your project includes multiple rooms or separate areas, use Add Another Area and enter each section individually.
If you already know how many square feet or square meters are included in each box of flooring, enter the Coverage Per Box to also estimate the number of boxes you should purchase.
How Much Flooring Waste Should You Add?
Most flooring projects require more material than the exact measured floor area. Extra flooring accounts for cuts along walls, damaged pieces, pattern alignment and material that may be useful for future repairs.
For a simple rectangular room with a straightforward layout, 5% to 10% waste is often reasonable. 10% is a useful general starting point for many flooring projects.
More complicated rooms, diagonal installations, patterned layouts or projects with many corners and obstacles may require 10% to 15% or more.
Always check the flooring manufacturer’s installation recommendations before ordering material.
How to Measure a Room for Flooring
For a rectangular room, measure the length and width at their longest points.
Multiply the two measurements to determine the floor area:
Length × Width = Floor Area
For example, a room that measures 12 feet by 14 feet has a net floor area of:
12 × 14 = 168 square feet
With a 10% waste allowance, the recommended flooring quantity becomes:
168 × 1.10 = 184.8 square feet
The Builzee calculator performs these calculations automatically.
Measuring Irregular Rooms
You do not need to estimate an irregular room as one large shape.
Instead, divide the room into smaller rectangular sections and measure each section separately. Use Add Another Area in the calculator for each section.
For example, an L-shaped room can usually be divided into two rectangles. The calculator adds the areas together before applying the selected waste allowance.
This method is also useful for open floor plans where kitchens, hallways and living areas have different dimensions.
Using Coverage Per Box
Flooring is commonly sold by the box rather than by an exact square-foot quantity.
Look for a value such as:
23.91 sq ft per box
on the product packaging or retailer’s product page.
Enter that number into Coverage Per Box, and the calculator will divide the required flooring quantity by the box coverage and round up to the next full box.
For example, if your project requires 184.8 square feet and each box covers 23.91 square feet:
184.8 ÷ 23.91 = 7.73
Because you cannot normally purchase 0.73 of a box, you would need:
8 boxes
Before You Order Flooring
The calculator is intended to help with material planning, but actual requirements can vary based on room shape, flooring type, installation direction, pattern and manufacturer instructions.
Verify your measurements before ordering, and consider keeping some matching material after installation for future repairs or replacement of damaged boards.
Builzee Tip: If you’re unsure between two quantities, it is generally better to have a small amount of matching flooring left over than to discover later that the same color, lot or pattern is no longer available.
